MSFG024 (SOLD, 65 lbs) Extremely rare 19th century carriage house wheel guards - designed to keep protruding wheel hubs from catching the doorway as carriages passed through. These fabulous stable fittings are representative of the very finest in early American iron casting. The detail is amazing - all the way down to the hair on the fetlocks and crown of the hoof. This pair is unmarked, but very similar to horse leg wheel guards shown in late 19th century J.W. Fiske and J.L.Mott stable fitting catalogs. They sport vestiges of old black paint with some vestiges of red/orange oxide primer showing through. Shown mounted to modern metal display stands - included if desired. Size of each "leg" without display fitting is 26" tall by 11" deep and 6" wide. The set weighs approximately 65 pounds
