Dear Beau,
A Nice Piece of Pie
It's the same old story with me. Just two days after
the end of the Chicago Botanic Garden Antiques Fair I
jumped into my truck and raced all night to another
antique fair in northeastern Pennsylvania - fueled by
iced Americanos and kippered beefsteak.
Dawn breaks as I pay my $15.00 early buyer fee and
quickly move into line behind those two cast iron
cookware dealers who wear the frying pan hats. Now
those of you who don't really know me might assume I
put myself through this for the great antiques
bargains...No, It's the pie.
I run to the food tent and head straight for the table
guarded by the two Amish girls who (except for the
Reeboks), look like they are auditioning for the part of
the "Girl with the Pearl Earring". Their table is heaped
with delicately crusted pieces of pie on little paper
plates and tucked into those old-fashioned wax paper
sleeves you probably have to order from someplace like
the Vermont Country Store.
I've come for the holy grail of Amish country pie - no
not that cloying shoofly - it's the rhubarb custard pie
I'm here for. Sweet, sour, smooth, crunchy and still
slightly warm.
I'm almost in tears - it's time to go to work.
All the Best - Beau, Nancy and Addy

Two fabulous sets of 19th c. sandstone gate piers, four
monumental carved limestone Green Man panels,
several cast stone figures including a 39' tall cast stone
putti playing a lyre, a figural carved limestone keystone
that would make a great fountainhead.
A kind of rough pair of J.W. Fiske "grape and leaf"
pattern urns on original marked pedestals, more than a
dozen antique Kramer Brothers Foundry planters in
assorted styles, a lovely cast iron garden gate with
applied cast iron morning glory ornament, a 7'-8'
section of 19th c. fencing with
unusual cast ornament.
A big bell shaped planter in a funny yellow paint, a big
pair of fern garden chairs in perfect condition that we
believe to be J.W. Fiske or Mott, all kinds of great sets
of garden seats and chairs.

Something Really Unusual |

This isn't lighting, but we also have a spectacular hand
forged bell that appears to represent St. George and
the Dragon. It came from southern New York or
Pennsylvania and is very reminiscent of Samuel Yellin's
work in Philadelphia.
"Samuel Yellin, the 20th Century's foremost artisan in
iron, started his business, Samuel Yellin Metalworkers,
in 1909. He called himself a blacksmith, but others
called him a genius, a devil with a hammer in his hand."

Wolff and his son Ben Wolff giving a potting

the history and lore of garden antiques and how they
can be used in your own garden.

It's Almost Movie Night Again! |
 |
Come on, live a little...leave the kids with the sitter
and come on out for Movie Night at Kimball & Bean.
Here is how it works: We pick a likely Saturday
night (the first one will be sometime in June) to show a
high quality, free movie on the side of our
big white barn in the country. You, and a lot of other
fun people, come out after 6:30, roll out your blankets
in our almost mosquito free garden area, open your
wine, spread out your dinners and have a great time
watching a great film (we try to start the movies as
soon as it's dark enough, usually around 8:00)
Somebody gave us another great idea just today.
Everyone could also bring a dessert to put on a
communal table to share after the movie.
Now here's where we need your help...
We need to start compiling a list of the films you think
we would all like to see. Now if you aren't
some freaky housebound movie nut who can list your
ten favorite films in 2.5 seconds, click on the the link to
Film Affinity below for some great ideas.
