I had to go down to the Sandwich Antiques Market last
Sunday to pick up a few things that an out-of-state
dealer had brought in for me. My sister Jennifer was
visiting from California and the idea of attending a real
Midwestern antique show with her "oh-so-important-
celebrity-antique-dealer" brother sounded very
exciting... that is until she realized that we were
leaving home at 4:00 am California time and it was
already 85 degrees and 90% humidity. I was afraid she
might need CPR before we even had the trailer hooked
up.
About the time we reached Huntley, I realized that I
had forgotten my checkbook... I gave Jenn that look
that only works on older sisters and soon I had $505 in
cash and three personal checks from her bank in San
Diego. Gee Jenn, do you happen to have a spare
$4000.00 in your checking account?
Well, it all worked out: Jenn and I picked-up our stuff,
ate the obligatory "butter-flied" pork sandwich at the
Church of Christ food tent, loaded the trailer
and "hightailed" it home at about 11:00 am under
threatening skies.
We dodged a bullet... At around 12:30 pm a violent
thunderstorm descended on the Sandwich fairgrounds -
smashing tents, knocking down trees, destroying
hundreds of thousands of dollars of antiques and
sending at least four people to area hospitals. My heart
goes out to my dealer friends - many of whom lost
almost everything.
