Kimball and Bean | Garden Antiques

Dear ,

I know it doesn't quite seem like it, but winter really is almost over. We're going to turn on the lights, put out all of our new merchandise and fling open the doors for spring. We re-open tomorrow, Friday March 6th, for the season. Even mother nature wants us to get started! It's going to be beautiful tomorrow and warm all weekend. Leave off the sunscreen just this once and get outside for a dose of vitamin D and color on that pasty noggin.

Kids grow up in such fits and starts that I hadn't really noticed how much Addy was becoming like me. It seemed like we had years of Hotwheels and squirt guns and then in one day he'd graduated to computers and instant messaging. I was off-loading some photos from my camera the other day when I found what appeared to be a series of food styling shots of last Wednesday's dinner. Roasted Cornish hens, mashed potatoes with truffle oil and crunchy, roasted Brussels sprouts - pretty fabulous. Turns out, Addy thought so too and he decided to record the scene on his plate for posterity before he dug into it. What does your child collect? I hope it's memories of weeknight dinners with Mom and Dad.

Nancy and I did a little food scouting of our own last month in Nashville. Although driving a twelve-ton diesel truck cuts down a little on your parking choices, a boy has gotta eat. We just worked around our parking problem by picking restaurants within an easy walk of our hotel or the convention center where the Antique and Garden Show was going on. I do still enjoy pulling up out front to drop off Nancy and pretending I'm leaving "Godzilla" for valet parking.

Here are some of our dining highlights: savory duck confit sandwiches and macaroons at Provence Breads, perfect Manhattans, juicy burgers and crispy pomme frites as thin as angel hair in the Hermitage Hotel's swanky Oak Bar, shrimp 'n grits and crawfish bread pudding topped with hollandaise at the Red Pony in Franklin, perfectly cooked pork chops with sweet potato gratin and broccolini at Miro District and the amazing hickory smoked, "Pumped Chicken" at South Street.

Now that you've eaten, it's time to get back to work. What are you going to do in your garden this year? I just might know someone who can help.

Warm spring regards,

Beau

But we are going to have to find a new place to hang it. The highway department launched a preemptive strike on the dying maples in our right of way before they could become hazards to navigation.
