  Dear Beau,

I'm just back from the midwestern "Too Thick to Drink - Too Thin to Plow River Tour of 2003". Except for the alarming lack of a decent Pinot Noir in the entire Iowa/Missouri border region - I think I can state that one need never leave the midwest to experience the finest in world cuisine! I wolfed down fried pork tenderloin sandwiches as big as elephant's ears at the Henry Yacht Club just south of where the Illinois river regains it's senses and heads towards that other French city, New Orleans, and not to Des Moines. I gorged myself on smokey-sweet pork ribs and sharp coleslaw at L.D.'s Barbeque - a converted filling station only locals know about -just off of 435 North in Kansas City, Missouri. I found Fairfield, Iowa - home to Maharishi University of Management and a surprising outpost of great Indian food in central Iowa.

Truckloads In From Points South and West

I slammed on the brakes when I spied a big pair of cast iron urns in the window of an antique shop downstate last winter. It turns out that they were just the tip of the iceberg. A group of around 20 assorted planters and urns had been acquired from an elderly antique dealer's estate 30 years ago...Last week they all came to their new home at Kimball & Bean.

Also included in this load were a set of huge (10') antique cypress store counters and 4 matching hand- forged coachlights (over 2 feet tall).

More Truckloads In From Points North and East

Maybe it's just all the recent news coverage regarding the Middle East and Asia, but I find myself increasingly fascinated with non-western motifs. We just got in an antique, 8' tall, gilt and red lacquer, oriental mirror. It's covered in the most unbelievable carved elements: birds, urns, butterflies, bats...you have to see it in person to believe it. We also just found the sweetest little vintage cast stone blackamoor garden stool in Wisconsin - great style and great old paint.

We've gotten so much new stuff in, I just can't list it all. Here are a few items: Lots of new lighting, another huge harvest table, a fabulous folding screen, a pair of 1940's "Salterini" garden console tables, 2 French Empire marble fireplaces and much more...
